What is the best or worst thing about Delano?

Question of the day: What is the best or worst thing about Delano?

Please keep it clean as this post is moderated. If you can't say anything nice, we don't need to read it.

Best: The community... It is very simple to get involve in the community. That closeness makes that possible for everyone to enjoy an event.

Worst: We lack the theaters, shopping centers. We have to go out of town for all these. It would be nice to bring these in. Loving the Starbucks though. Give the gift of love, GIFT CERTIFICATE to Starbucks are good. Have you seen their prices? :-)

The best thing about Delano is that it is a small community where everyone knows each other and a lot of us work together toward a common goal, whatever that may be. The people are amazing.

The down sides of Delano, we have nothing to do, no shopping, the only place to eat is Dennys and Perkos. Then when the city tried to bring in big guns like walmart and other sorts people always talk against it saying it's going to hurt the community mostly because of "personal interests." Competition is good for the economy, it is good for the markets of Delano. If we were smart we would bring people in. Business is a matter of competition and I think the people of Delano often forget that.

The "special interests" you speak of are not interested in the community - only in their financial monopolies. Those who are trying to stagnate growth in Delano should have their businesses boycotted.
How sad that less than 11 percent of the teachers who work here actually live in this community. Can you imagine the change in economic growth if people who worked in town actually spent their paychecks here instead of sending all of that money down highway 99?

I agree with Arnold. When my students find out that I live here in Delano, they are shocked..because so many life in Bakersfield.
The Best: Small town, very little traffic, great students (best in kern, in my opinion)
The Worst: Gang violence, the prisons, the way many disrespect the environment (litter), lack of commerce.
This community should not build any more housing developments unless it plans on bringing in business to support our population.
Delano is a great place that can get a lot better.

Best: You know everybody.

Worst: Gangs, Drugs and the young peoples total disrespect of the town. I was born and raised in Delano and loved every minute of it. But it has changed so much

Best - Just like what everyone else said.. I like the closeness of the community. Everyone knows everyone!

Worst - Definitely gangs and drugs. I dont really like the cruising people do on Cecil Ave either. It gets irritating.. dont these people have anything better to do than clog the streets of Delano? Oh yeah... lets not forget the HOT weather during the summers.

Good about Delano is the main thing the Town people know each other and still help and respect each other, what I mean is like the Cinco de Mayo Club, and how I know some people who give there time to volunteer to young kids and how there are still stuff for children to enjoy like the Haunted House and Santa Claus. Also I like the idea that Delano High School is the Best I went there like 28 years ago I graduated in 1980 and I loved the idea of riding the bus from Earlimart to DJUHS. I like the support that the townspeople support and lead an hand to the Homeless and how Food Basket is set up to Family who are in the need for that Special Meal.
Bad: The only bad thing is the Drugs and Gangs which has been a problem now more then ever, I mean when I went to High School back in the 70's there were drugs but not so bad like now and gangs why are there gangs if the people who fight against each other are the same race if you put them in front of each other they are the same, there is also the fact that the DARE is no longer being offered in school, that is very bad for all of the kids. Also on writing on fence and walls that is a big problem why not paint or draw good things for example there is a house next to the Saint Mary's School there is a fence with painting of Troops that is what should be painted on walls things that we could be proud of not just for Delano but also for being here in the USA. Drugs & Gangs are the big problems here and killing young incident kids or even older people.

I thoroughly enjoy this blog. I hope more people continue contributing to it. The next step is to address these concerns at the next city council meeting. The concilmembers were elected by us to represent us. Let our voices be heard!!!!

Once again, I agree with you Arnold. This blog is great, but without actions and follow through our thoughts will remain locked into this internet world. I would like more people of this community to comment on Delano. It would be nice to print the blog out for everyone on the city council.

Hi everybody! I'm one of the CalPoly students who's helping the City of Delano address its peoples issues and concerns. I just wanna acknowledge all of you guys here for creating this great website and getting together online discussing and voicing out your opinions about Delano. Its good to see how the community of Delano cares for their City.

Also, I wanted to inform everybody that our class will be presenting our final research and suggested recommendations for the City of Delano TODAY, MARCH 11, 2009, 5:30 PM, in the City Hall Chamber.

It would be great to have more people in the community see our presentation and tell us what you think.

Thanks!
