What Strategy do you want Delano to Prioritize? What are the most pressing issues and concerns you feel Delano should prioritize?

Hi everybody! I'm one of the CalPoly students who's helping the City of Delano address its peoples issues and concern. I just wanted to acknowledge all of you guys here for creating this great website and getting together online discussing and voicing out your opinions about Delano. Its good to see how the community of Delano cares for their City.

Also, I wanted to inform everybody that our class will be presenting our final research and suggested recommendations/strategies for the City of Delano TODAY, MARCH 11, 2009, 5:30 PM, in the City Hall Chamber.

It would be great to have more people in the community see our presentation and tell us what you think.

To answer your question. The people of Delano at most first priority is bringing in the retail giant WALMART in the city. It is a needed change that Delano needs to bring in revenue and other retailers to our city so we can grow. We have thrown enough money to other cities and I am sure other retailers will follow.

We need to change the looks of Kern County and be the momentum of change in our city. On our travels, I have noticed architectures from other city that gets noticed. A Victorian style buildings or a housing community, the looks of Santa Barbara Downtown, the looks that we travelers love to go to cause it is something different that captures people to come and visit to spend money in the city.

We are missing opportunities in the wedding, event market. It is a million dollar industry that we are missing out on due to lack of places to have the event and scenery for artist to show off the city to a place where they can have their memories. Lets look at The Getty museum for example. The garden as simple as it is and upkeep will attract people to come in and explore the city. We can learn a lot from other cities that we can work with to use in ours.

We are too modern and I guess everywhere you go, buildings, housing are all today. We need to bring in a different outlook that this is Delano. A place that they will remember because of the buildings, gardens, the colors and surrounding. Even the downtown can look elegant in which the city had started with the street look. A little stucco and paint of natural colors through out downtown will change the looks of it.

Just a few ideas. The way you look at a city is from a tourist perspective. What do I want to see when I visit this place?

I feel that our youth and land use should have a top notch on that list; really we should have a YMCA here for healthy activities. As an alternative to our Rec center; not that it’s not great, but we are growing and we need to keep our children busy with positive reinforcement and have many more affordable options. Many YMCA's offer gymnastics, swimming, aerobics, even for adults. We need to have a lot more volunteers as well. I cannot believe we have to pay people to coach our youth sports. It’s silly. Than we have parents wondering why there teenagers or either pregnant or on drugs, and in gangs. Just my thoughts anyway.
What is going with our Boy's and Girl's Club?
Anyone know how someone can volunteer?
