Cal Poly students work on city plan for Delano
By Jenny Shearer
DELANO — This city serves as a laboratory for students studying planning at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
About 20 senior city and regional planning majors trekked from the coast Monday to present what they learned about the city through outreach activities and research to a joint meeting of the City Council and Planning Commission.
Residents would like more activities for kids, upgrades to park facilities, improvements to older buildings downtown and pathways for pedestrians and cyclists, students said.
City officials’ ideas include: to make Delano safe for all, offer economic development opportunities and create aesthetic standards for downtown businesses.
By mid-March, students in the community planning lab course will finish their work and submit a strategic plan to the city of Delano. It’s meant to give officials the tools they need to build a plan — ideas, ordinance and policy suggestions, things other cities do. In the meantime, Cal Poly students will continue their outreach and research. Delano residents should look for the “plan van” in their community Jan. 31.
Although she hadn’t heard of Delano before the class, Holly Fellows, 21, knows how valuable community input is in the planning process.
“Everyone wants to grow but keep things the same,” she said.
Mayor Sam Ramirez said planning priorities can overlap or go hand-in-hand.
For example, if city parks have the amenities people want to use, that could cut gang activities in them.
